Spicy lamb burgers

  • Spicy lamb burgers 
  • 500g lean lamb mince
  • 1 small onion, grated
  • 1 small eating apple, grated
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp chili flakes or 1 tbsp sweet chilli sauce
  • 1 medium egg, beaten
  • 50g fresh wholemeal breadcrumbs
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 4 burger buns
  • 2 tomatoes, thinly sliced
  • Handful of rocket

 

Prep time: 15-20 mins Cook time: 5 mins Serves: 6

1. Place the lamb in a large mixing bowl and add the onion, apple, cumin, chilli (or chilli sauce), egg, breadcrumbs and seasoning.

2. Mix thoroughly with your hands until really well blended. Shape the mixture into four large burgers.

3. Brush each side of the burgers with a little oil and heat a frying pan until hot. Cook for 5-7 minutes per side, depending on how thick you've made the burgers. 

4. Serve in burger buns with the tomatoes and tocket.

Editor's note: Serve with potato wedges. Cut 4 large baking potatoes into wedges. Brush with oil and bake in a pre-heated oven at 200 degrees C / 180 degrees C fan oven / Gas Mark 6 for approx. 40 minutes until golden.

This mixture also makes great meatballs. Roll spoonfuls in your hands to make balls a bit bigger than a walnut. Fry off in a pan until golden and cooked through, then stuff into pitta bread with chopped salad and a drizzle of tzatziki.
